SCRIPTURE WRITING PLAN
It has been proven that writing things down helps us to remember. It helps us focus and clarify our thoughts as we write. Writing helps us not just skim over what we are reading. It slows us down.
Writing the scriptures was done throughout the Bible. The Kings of Israel were required to write the commands of God and keep a copy with them. They were to read it daily. (Deut. 17:18-20)
Writing Scripture is a good way to get it down deep in our heart. (Psalm 119:11) Meditating on the Word we have hidden in our hearts helps us to be prepared to fight against Satan when he tries to trick us into slacking off on God's commands.
THE PROCESS
Find your favorite spot to spend time with God. If necessary, set a specific amount of time to write out the Scripture for the day. Gather resources you want to use. Get a notebook to write the Scripture in and a pen that you like. You may want to have several versions of the Bible. You may also want to use a dictionary or concordance to look up words. You can also use apps on your phone or the internet to look up words. Pray and ask the Holy Spirit for His help and guidance. Ask Him to clear your head and guide your thoughts; to open your eyes and your heart to His words; and to open your ears to hear His voice. Write out the Scripture for the day word-for-word in your notebook. If a word jumps out at you, highlight it, and look at it more deeply.
As you write, ask some questions such as:
Who wrote the passage and why?
Why is a sentence structured the way it is? Is there something significant in the structure?
What does each word mean? Look for God's meaning. He chose each word for a reason.
Is there another verse that comes to mind? The Bible explains the Bible. Write down the other verse when you think of one.
Apply this verse to your life. Learning God's Word does us no good if we are not willing to apply it to our lives. How does God want to change your life with the words you are writing? (2 Tim. 3:16)
Write down thoughts and impressions you get from the verses you have written.
End your study by praying the Scripture you have just written. Thank God for what He has revealed to you and for helping you apply it to your life.
These are just guidelines to get you started. Remember that this is your study time. Shape the process into what works best for you! Perhaps this is a totally new concept for you. So just write the Scripture. and then let God show you want He wants you to learn. As in any new discipline or exercise, we have to start and then grow into it. Don't just write down verses to get them done. Remember that our purpose in writing Scripture is to learn it better and to love it more, so that as a result we love God more.
Happy Writing!
